Edward Dmytryk produced a set of 'rules of cutting' that he believes should be used in all cuts to help create a great film:
- Never make a cut without a positive reason
- When undecided on what frame to cut on cut loger rather than shorter
- Whenever possible cut 'in movement'
- The 'fresh' is always preferable to the stale
- All scenes should begin and end with continuing action
- Cut for proper values rather than proper matches
- Substance first then form
